The Duke of Sussex asked competitors to overcome a “moment of difficulty and division in many parts of the world” when he opened the latest edition of the Invictus Games in Canada.
Prince Harry appeared at the opening ceremony in Vancouver with his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan, on Saturday.
The couple observed from the stands, cheering and applauding the United Kingdom team while their competitors walked on stage.
His public appearance arrives only a few hours after the president of the United States, Donald Trump, talk about the couple in an interview, saying “I will leave it alone” when asked if he thought that Prince Harry should be deported.
“He has enough problems with his wife,” added the president. “She is terrible.”
The Prince founded the Invictus Games in London in 2014.
This year marks the seventh edition of the competition for wounded military veterans, which will include more than 500 athletes competing in 11 different events, even for the first time for winter sports.
The ceremony included Musical performances by Katy Perry, Chris Martin de Coldplay and Nelly Furtado.
“We gathered here in Vancouver in a spirit of unity,” Prince Harry told the 40,000 crowd.
Beyond any difference, here in the Invictus games we are in mutual respect, competing fiercely, but believing in the other. “
“During the last decade, I have lost the account of the times we have heard you tell us that the Invictus games saved you. I respectfully do not agree. Invictus did not save you. You saved yourself,” the Duke told the competitors.
Previously, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, told the New York Post that he would not be in favor of deporting the prince, who moved to the United States in 2020.
Some activists have questioned the US visa status of the Duke of Sussex after he admitted that they previously taken illegal drugs in their memoirs, replacement.
The Heritage Foundation, a conservative group of experts, filed a lawsuit asking for the Duke’s immigration records, suggesting that he had lied in his visa form or received special treatment when he and the duchess moved south of California in 2020 .
Trump has previously suggested that it was discovered that Prince Harry had lied “appropriate action.”
But when The New York Post asked him Friday if the Duke would be deported, Trump said: “I don’t want to do that. I’ll leave it alone.
“She has enough problems with her wife. She is terrible.”
Former actress Meghan has been Trump’s vocal criticism, calling it “divisive” and a “misogynist”, While Trump He has previously called Meghan “unpleasant.”
In the interview, the president also praised Prince Harry’s older brother, Prince William, “a great young man.”
Admitting the use of previous drugs does not result in automatically denial of a US visa, but it can cause delays, and lie in a visa form can lead to deportation.
US presidents normally do not get involved in individual visa decisions. The couple has not responded to Trump’s comments.
The Duke was inspired to establish the games after seeing the 2013 wars games in the United States, where the injured and retired service personnel competed.
The first edition of the Games was held in London in 2014, with subsequent competitions in the United States, Canada and Australia.
The 2017 games were also where Prince Harry was photographed With his then girlfriend Meghan for the first time.
