President Donald Trump said he will announce an import tax of 25% in all steel and aluminum that enters the US. UU., A measure that will have the greatest impact on Canada.
Trump also said that there would be an announcement later in the week about reciprocal tariffs in all countries that imposed on imports from the USA, but did not specify what nations they would go, or if there were any exemption.
“If they charge us, we charge them,” Trump said.
He told reporters his plans while traveling from his Mar-A-Lago Resort in Florida to the Super Bowl in New Orleans on Sunday.
Canada and Mexico are two of the largest steel partners in the United States, and Canada is the largest aluminum metal supplier in the United States.
During his first mandate, Trump put 25% tariffs in steel imports and 10% in Aluminum imports in Canada, Mexico and the European Union.
But the United States reached an agreement a year later With Canada and Mexico to end these rates, although EU import taxes remained in force until 2021.
Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said Monday that he would announce tariffs on “all” for steel and aluminum.
“Any steel that arrives in the United States will have a 25%rate,” he said.
In response, Doug Ford, the Prime Minister of the Province of Ontario, accused Trump of “changing the posts and constant chaos, putting our economy at risk” in an online publication. Canada’s production is concentrated in Ontario.
Trump’s comments mark another great climbing In Trump’s commercial policy, which has threatened a commercial war with multiple countries.
Tariffs are a central part of Trump’s economic vision: he sees them as a way of growing the economy of the United States, protecting jobs and increasing tax revenues.
Earlier this month, Trump threatened to impose 25% import tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products But then delayed that plan for 30 days – Until early March, after talking with the leaders of both countries.
It also brought new US taxes of 10% in all Chinese products that enter the United States, which led China to retaliate with its own import taxes on some US assets.
Trump also said he would announce more teta tates for an eye on “Tuesday or Wednesday” and that they would “almost immediately” after the announcement.
“Those who are taking advantage of the United States, we will have reciprocal (tariffs),” he said. “It will be great for everyone, including other countries.”
On the trip to New Orleans, Trump also signed a proclamation that designates the day of the “Gulfo de América” on February 9 to celebrate his order in the name of the Gulf of Mexico, while his plane crossed the body of water.
Mexico He argues that the United States cannot legally change the name of the Gulf Because the UN rules dictate that the sovereign territory of an individual country only extends to 12 nautical miles from the coast.
Trump was also asked if he had spoken with Russian president Vladimir Putin and replied: “I don’t want to talk about it, and if we are talking, I don’t want to tell you about the conversations too early, but I do it. He believes we are progressing.”
“I imagine I would meet with Putin at the right time … at the appropriate time,” he said.
Trump also repeated his unlikely suggestions that the United States could take care of Canada and the Gaza Strip, saying that Canada would be better as the “state 51” and that he was “committed to buying and owner of Gaza”.
