CITADEL CEO Ken Griffin sent a severe warning against the president’s negative impact Donald TrumpThe combative approach of the United States commercial policy.
“From my point of view, the bombastic rhetoric, the damage has already been done,” Griffin said Tuesday at the UBS Financial Services Conference in Key Biscayne, Florida. “It is a big mistake to resort to this form of rhetoric when you try to drive a bargain because … it is broken down into the minds of the CEO, the political leaders that we cannot depend on the United States, as our commercial partner.”
The comments of the founder of the multi -million dollar coverage fund occurred after Trump on Monday night signed an order that Impose 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. The president has already promulgated a 10% duty in all Chinese imports, while pausing their 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada temporarily.
Griffin, who voted for Trump and was a megadonor for Republican politicians, believes that the hostile dynamics caused by punitive tariffs could make long -term investments challenging for multinational companies and investors.
“It makes it difficult for multinationals, in particular, to think about how to plan the next five, 10, 15, 20 years, particularly when it comes to long -term time investments that could be negatively affected by a degradation of the current terms of commitment as between the main western countries when it comes to terms and trade, “he said.
Griffin previously warned that Capitalism of friends could be a consequence of rates. Crony’s capitalism is an economic system marked by close and mutually advantageous relations between business leaders and government officials.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
