A teacher fatally stabbed an eight -year -old girl in a primary school in South Korea, in an incident that has shocked the nation.

The teacher, who is 40 years old, confessed stabbing the student in the central city of Daejeon, police said.

The girl was found with a white weapon wounds on the second floor of a school building at 18:00 local time (09:00 GMT) on Monday and was declared dead in the hospital. The teacher was by her side with a knife wounds that the police said she could be self -inflicted.

The interim president of South Korea, Choi Sang-Mok, ordered an investigation into the case on Tuesday and urged the authorities to “implement the necessary measures to ensure that such incidents will never happen again.”

Some locals placed flowers and a teddy doll at the school door, which closed on Tuesday.

The teacher had requested an absence permit of six months citing depression on December 9, but returned to school only 20 days later after a doctor evaluated it as suitable for working, said the Daejeon education office.

She did not have a relationship with the student, authorities said.

Days before stabbing, the teacher had shown violent behavior, including putting another teacher in a head key, they said.

Two officials of the Education Office visited the school on Monday, the morning of the stabbing, to investigate that altercation.

The student was reported as disappeared on Monday night after the bus driver informed school that he had not arrived to be collected that day.

Police also said they would continue to question the teacher after she recovers from her surgery.

After the attack on the co -worker, the Education Office recommended that the teacher be licensed and physically separate from the other teacher.

She was forced to sit next to the Viceciral desktop so she could keep under surveillance closely.

Nor had he been teaching classes since his license in December, and had no contact with the eight -year -old student, said the official.

South Korea is a country generally safe with strict laws of weapons. But in recent years, he has dealt with several high -profile crimes, including stabbing.

“It hurts to see that incident because a school should be our safest space,” said interim president Choi. “I offer my deep condolences to the victim’s family who suffered great shock and agony.”
