Part of what Star Trek does so rewarding is that it is full of tropics, including episodes where Picard acts as a lawyer or episodes where Holodeck is trying to kill everyone. One of the best tropics of franchise, however, is the one that most fans have never noticed. The TROPE is a Cardassian cartologist and it all started excellent Deep Space Nine Episode “Duet”.
Cardassian monologue
The “duet” is an episode where Major Kira must investigate the potential war criminal Cardassian to find out that he is an innocent man hoping to be tested and executed so that Bajor citizens can close. It is an amazing episode of the season 1 because it shows serious acting chops of visitor Nana and Harris Yulin, whose Cardassian eventually lectures on the moving speech about the horrors of witnessing, and the need to face justice Cardassia. And according to Deep Space Nine Showrunner Ira Steven Behr, this was the first example of franchise “Long Cardassian monologue.
If you are a Star Trek The fan asks what the hell is Cardassian a monologue trop, then it’s official: you have to watch more Deep Space Nine. As Behr willingly explains: “Cardassians loves to speak.”
He watched it by giving a long list of Cardassians on DS9 who simply love the sound of their own voice: “Garak loves to speak. Enabran Tain loves talking. Dukat loves talking – very slowly – and Marritza certainly loves to speak. ”
During Deep Space NineThe writers leaned to the idea that the Cardassian monologue was simply part of the culture of these aliens. Even the characters in the show comment on it, like Gul Dukat in the morning to Weyoun that “War is such a thirsty work… do you disagree?” It made his allies Dominion to answer, “Maybe if you didn’t speak so much, your throat wouldn’t be so dry. ”
What is interesting about the Cardassians Behr list, who like to give long monologues, most were very important for the long -term arch show. For example, Dukat is de facto a big bad of the series, and Garak is a shady ally Sisko and crew that effectively embodies the moral of the whole series. Meanwhile, Tain appeared in some unforgettable two -part episodes and was later revealed as Garak’s father, illustrating the complex relationship that these two men share.
For comparison, the character of Marritza from the “duet” is relatively small, but left a big impact on the show. The DS9 had a harsh season 1, but this episode proved how great a show could be when it really shot on all cylinders, and Harris Yulin gave the emotional anchor that gave this story the weight and gravity deserving. In addition, Yulin was promoted by Cardassian a monologue, which became the main troproom that would affect the rest of the series for a better part of the decade.
Like huge fans Deep Space NineIt is legitimately impossible to imagine Cardassians without their monologues. In addition to introducing the talents of these actors of these aliens, these crispy dialogue bits help us learn more about the true motivations of our characters. It’s honestly one of the best tropics of the best Star Trek Show When was made. And it would not be part of the history of franchise, not if it was probably defined by the DS9 for the whole generation of fans.
