The programs to address HIV, polyomyelitis, MPOX and avian flu have been affected by the freezing of tens of billions of dollars of help abroad from the United States, says the head of the World Organization of the World Organization of the Health (WHO).
The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has taken measures to close the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), arguing that his expense is “totally inexplicable.”
However, Chief Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has urged the Trump administration to consider the financing of aid until other solutions can be found.
HIV treatments and other services have been interrupted in 50 countries, he said in an informative session on Wednesday.
Speaking publicly for the first time about the freezing funds in the help of the United States, at a virtual press conference in Geneva, Dr. Tedros said: “There are actions in which the United States government is taking .. .
In particular, Pepfar’s suspension said, the president’s emergency plan for AIDS relief, which he had arrested the treatment of HIV, tests and prevention services in 50 countries.
He added that a relief for services that save lives had not stopped the interruption.
“Clinics are closed and health workers have licensed,” said Dr. Tedros.
Global health experts have warned about the spread of the disease, as well as delays in the development of vaccines and new treatments as a result of cuts.
Trump has argued that Usaid is “incompetent and corrupt.”
Recently he announced huge cuts to the workforce of 10,000 people from the agency and the immediate suspension of almost all their aid programs.
The agency spends around $ 40 billion (£ 32 billion), around 0.6% of the total annual government expenditure of the United States, in humanitarian aid, much of which are destined for health programs.
The vast majority of USAID money is spent in Asia, Sub -Saharan Africa and Europe, where it is mainly used for humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.
Elon Musk, the technological billionaire who is working on the White House effort to reduce the size of the federal government, has previously stated that the aid agency is “a criminal organization.”
Neither Trump nor Musk have provided clear evidence to support their statements.
As well as freezing in the USAID, President Trump has taken measures to withdraw the United States from WHO.
According to the Biden Administration, the United States was the largest financier of the UN Health Agency and in 2023 contributed almost a fifth of the agency’s budget.
Dr. Tedros said Trump’s decision was affecting collaboration between the countries of global health threats. He also said that the United States had reduced its report from avian flu cases in humans.
WHO says that it has used emergency measures similar to those used during Covid pandemic to fill the gaps where there is scarcity, in the antiretroviral medication that save lives, for example, which is used to treat people who live with HIV.
Meg Doherty, director of Global HIV, hepatitis and sexually transmitted infection programs (STIs) in WHO, said that efforts were being made to coordinate the exchange of vital supplies of medicines between countries.
However, he said that a better long -term solution was needed: “We have been looking for support from one country to another to share, but this is a short -term approach.”
