Trump says Putin agrees to begin negotiations to end the war in Ukraine

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said he had a “long and highly productive” phone call with Vladimir Putin on Wednesday in which the leaders agreed to begin negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

In a publication about his Truth social platform, Trump said he and Russian president had “agreed that our respective teams begin negotiations immediately” and that he would begin by calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to inform him about his conversation.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin supported Trump’s idea that the time had come to work together.

He added that the phone call lasted almost an hour and a half, during which Putin invited Trump to visit Moscow.

The presidency of Ukraine later confirmed that Zelensky had received a Trump phone call, which lasted an hour, according to the AFP news agency.

The news occurs when the Secretary of Defense of the United States, Pete Hegseth, told the members at a NATO summit that he was not “unrealistic” to expect Ukraine to return to his borders prior to 2014.
