The president of the United States, Donald Trump, organizes Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the White House for conversations about trade.
Modi’s two -day visit occurs when Trump ordered that US business partners must face reciprocal tariffs: Tit import taxes per eye so that they coincide with similar tariffs already charged by those countries in US exports.
Immigration was a high on the agenda, and Trump hoped to ask India to recover thousands of undocumented immigrants.
Writing previously in X, Modi said he had also discussed space, technology and innovation at a meeting with Trump Elon Musk’s ally.
Trump and Modi have developed a personal relationship over the years, despite the friction about trade.
“We have had a wonderful relationship,” Trump said as he welcomed his visitor to Washington DC on Thursday.
Modi said: “I firmly believe with Trump that we will work with twice the speed we did in his first mandate.”
“They will buy a lot of our oil and gas,” Trump added. “They need it. And we have it.”
Shortly before his bilateral, Trump ordered his advisors to calculate new broad tariffs on US commercial partners worldwide, warning that they could begin to enter into force before April 1.
At a press conference at the Oval office, the president told reporters that “our allies are worse than our enemies,” when it comes to import taxes.
“We had a very unfair system for us,” said the Republican president before meeting with Modi. “Everyone took advantage of the United States.”
The White House also issued a press release that shot a commercial shot in the Arcos de la India and other countries.
The document indicated that the United States’s average rate on agricultural goods was 5% for the countries to which Washington had granted the most favored nation status (MFN).
“But the Average applied MFN rate of India is 39%,” said the White House Informative Sheet.
“India also charges a 100% tariff on US motorcycles, while we only charge a 2.4% tariff on Indian motorcycles.”
On Thursday, Trump recognized the risks of his tariff policy, since economists warned that such import taxes could increase consumer prices.
“Prices could rise a little, in the short term, but prices will also go down,” he said in the Oval office.
But he argued that politics would boost American manufacturing and the country would “flood with jobs.”
Trump has already placed an additional 10% rate in China imports, citing its fentanyl production, a deadly opioid that has fueled an epidemic of overdose from the United States.
He has also prepared tariffs on Canada and Mexico, the two largest commercial partners in the United States, who could enter into force in March after being suspended for 30 days.
On Monday, he eliminated the exemptions of his steel and aluminum rates 2018.
