The prosecutor renounces after they tell him to leave the case against the mayor of New York

The best US prosecutor in Manhattan resigned days after the United States Department of Justice told his office to launch a case of corruption against the mayor of New York City, Eric Adams.

Danielle Sassoon, a conservative lawyer recently promoted by Donald Trump, said that dismissing the case would have established an “impressive and dangerous precedent.”

It is alleged that Adams accepted gifts for a total of more than $ 100,000 (£ 75,000) of Turkish citizens in exchange for favors, such as giving up the security regulations in the Turkish consulate in the city. He denies the charges.

On Monday, a justice department official said that the case “restricted” the mayor’s ability to address “illegal immigration and violent crimes” in the city.

The order of Emil Bove, the interim attached attorney general, did not approach the merits of the case against Adams, a Democrat, and pointed out that the department would reserve the right to reinstate the charges after the elections of mayor of New York City in November.

Sassoon refused to leave the case, however, establishing his reasoning in a letter to the bove chief, Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday.

“Because the law does not support a dismissal, and because I am sure that Adams has committed the crimes with which he is accused, I cannot accept looking for a dismissal promoted by inappropriate considerations,” he wrote.

Sassoon said I had the duty to enforce the law impartially, “and that includes prosecuting a valid accusation, regardless of whether his dismissal would be politically advantageous, for the defendant or for those who designated me.”

Bove flicked again in a letter accepting his resignation. He accused Sassoon of trying to “continue seeking a prosecution of political motivation despite an express instruction to dismiss the case.”

He also said that other prosecutors who worked in the case of Adams would be licensed and subject to internal investigation, and that Sassoon would also investigate.

The Mayor of New York met with Trump in Florida days before his inauguration, and then attended his oath at the ceremony on January 20. Adams denied at that time that he discussed his legal problems with the incoming president.

Later, on Thursday, Trump told journalists that he had not asked the case against Adams to be retired.

However, Bove’s letter described its instructions as “direct orders that implement a duly elected president’s policy.”

Adams also met Trump’s “Tsar Border”, Tom Homan, to discuss the repression of administration immigration. After the meeting, he said he would allow federal immigration authorities to restore an office in the city’s Rikers island prison.

In a statement, Adams said: “I want to work with the new federal administration, not the war with them, to find common land and improve the lives of New Yorkers.”

Adams was accused in September 2024 for charges of fraud to the cable, bribery and receiving foreigner campaign contributions.

According to an accusation of 57 pages, the mayor allegedly accepted more than the hotel stays, luxurious meals and improvements of Turkish national airlines as of 2016, when he was president of the New York city district of Brooklyn.

In one case, it is alleged that Adams paid $ 600 for a two -night stay in a luxury hotel in Istanbul, a visit that was valued at approximately $ 7,000.
