European leaders meet for an emergency summit about war in Ukraine as concerns about Donald Trump’s interventions about the peace process grow.
Sir Keir Starmer, who is expected to attend the summit in Paris, said it was a “unique moment in generation for our national security” and that it was clear that Europe should assume a more important role in NATO.
It occurs after Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine said European leaders would be consulted but would not participate in any conversation between the United States and Russia about the end of the war in Ukraine.
The senior officials of the United States must meet with Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in Saudi Arabia in the next few days, US officials said.
In the comments that probably generate concern in Ukraine and among European allies, the special envoy Keith Kellogg said that the previous negotiations had failed because many parts had been involved.
“It can be like chalk on the board, it can grate a little, but I tell you something that is really honest,” he said on Saturday.
It is understood that Sir Keir sees his role as joining the US and Europe to guarantee a united peace approach in Ukraine.
The United Kingdom Prime Minister will discuss the opinions of European leaders when visiting the president of the United States, Trump in the White House at the end of this month.
An additional meeting of European leaders is expected together with President Volodymyr Zelensky after the United Kingdom Prime Minister returned from Washington.
Sir Keir said the United Kingdom “would work to ensure that we maintain the United States and Europe together,” and added that the two could not “allow any division in the alliance to distract” the “external enemies.”
“This is a moment of a generation for our national security in which we commit ourselves to the reality of the world today and the threat we face from Russia,” he said.
“It is clear that Europe must assume a more important role in NATO while we work with the United States to ensure the future of Ukraine and face the threat we face from Russia.”
Previously, the president of Ukraine, Zelensky, requested the creation of a “European Army” Amid the growing concern, the United States no longer comes to the aid of the continent.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, he said that the speech of the American vice president JD Vance at the event had made it clear that the old relationship between Europe and the United States was “ending” and the continent “must adapt to that.”
But Zelensky also said that Ukraine “would never accept agreements made behind us without our participation” after Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to begin peace conversations.
The president of the United States, earlier this week, announced that he had a long conversation with the Russian leader and that negotiations to stop the “ridiculous war” in Ukraine would begin “immediately.”
Trump then “informed” Zelensky of his plan.
On Saturday, the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, made a phone call with Russia Foreign Minister “Building” Wednesday’s call between Trump and Putin.
Senior Trump administration officials will begin peace conversations with Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in Saudi Arabia in the next few days, American representative Michael McCaul said to the Reuters news agency.
McCaul, president of the Chamber’s Foreign Affairs Committee, said he understood that Zelensky had been invited to participate in the Saudi conversations, which aimed to organize a meeting with Trump, Putin and the Ukrainian President “to finally bring peace and finish this conflict” .
A day before, Vance had launched a Hosted attack against European democraciessaying that the greatest threat facing the continent was not from Russia and China, but “from the inside.”
In a speech at the Munich Security Conference, the Trump administration line repeated that Europe must “take a great step to its own defense.”
David Lammy has said that the countries of the United Kingdom and the EU must spend more in defense, and Europe faces an “existential question” even in case of negotiated peace in Ukraine.
The United Kingdom Foreign Secretary told the Munich Security Conference on Saturday “Putin will not leave”And that, although it was positive, 23 NATO countries were now spending at least 2% of their GDP in defense, “we all know we have to go up.”
