The choice of Trump administration of Saudi Arabia as the location of the key conversations about Ukraine underlines to what extent the kingdom has arrived diplomatically from the state near the Paria became after the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.
The shadow issued by the country and its de facto leader, the heir prince Mohammed Bin Salman in particular, seems to have raised, although there are still concerns occasionally raised in international forums on the registry of human rights of Saudi Arabia.
On many fronts, in entertainment and sport in particular, the country has spent large amounts of money to promote its ambitions to be an important player on the world stage.
Diplomatically, Saudi leadership has also improved its role. During the Biden years, the kingdom increased its turn of the United States dependence as its key international ally.
The Saudi made it clear that they would follow what they perceive as their interests in the first place, putting into account the closest relations with the countries seen as key rivals for the United States, such as Russia and China.
Donald Trump’s return to the White House will have been well received by the Saudi.
His first foreign visit in his first term went to Saudi Arabia, and the transactional nature of his foreign policy is more conducive to current Saudi leadership.
One of the possible achievements that Mr. Trump would like to attribute his registration would be a peace agreement between the Saudi and Israel, which would be the culmination of Abraham’s agreements that began in his first term.
But the war in Gaza has subsequently filed and can increase the price that Saudi Arabia will demand a peace agreement.
The Saudites hastened to announce their definitive rejection of the Trump Plan for Gaza, to eliminate all Palestinians and rebuild it as a resort.
It has stimulated the kingdom to try to create a viable alternative plan with other Arab states, which would see Gazanes remain in place as the enclave is rebuilt and lead to a state solution of the conflict.
The current thought of the Trump administration would seem to disagree with this, in its policy towards Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
The way in which this will be resolved will be key to the dynamics in the evolution relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United States.
What is clear is that Saudi do not intend to go in their ambition to become an essential player in global diplomacy.
