Pope Francis has developed pneumonia both in his lungs and in his condition remains “complex,” says the Vatican.
The 88 -year -old has suffered a respiratory infection for more than a week and was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Friday.
“The computerized tomography of the follow -up chest that the Holy Father suffered this afternoon … demonstrated the appearance of bilateral pneumonia, which required additional pharmacological therapy,” said the Vatican.
He said that laboratory tests, a chest x -ray and the Pope’s clinical condition “continue to present a complex image.”
Despite this, Pope Francis remained in “good mood,” according to the statement.
Before his admission last week, the Pope had symptoms of bronchitis for several days and delegated officials to read speeches prepared at the events.
He had to lead several events during the weekend for the Catholic year 2025 that extends until next January, however, all public events in the Pope’s calendar have been canceled until Sunday.
On Monday, the Vatican said that doctors had changed the Pope’s pharmacological therapy for the second time during his stay in the hospital to address what at that time was thought to be a “polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract.”
The Pope is especially prone to pulmonary infections due to the development of pleuresia as an adult and that takes part of one of his lungs at 21.
During his 12 years as leader of the Roman Catholic Church, the Argentine has been hospitalized several times, even in March 2023, when he spent three nights at the hospital with bronchitis.
