You would probably assume that Star Trek and the Dalai Lama have little to do. After all, the first is a long-term sci-fi franchise created by Gene Roddenberry and the second is the spiritual leader of Tibet. The only thing that lasted was an episode Next generation Combining the best of both worlds (and so in). When filming Star Trek: Another generation The 3 Ensigns of Command Episode, producers and actors Trek had to meet the Dalai accompaniment and even took pictures of the data actor Brent Spiner.
This is one story that has been almost lost in time, but has been so ironically discovered thanks to the time of traveling time. When working on an article about Star Trek: First ContactWriter Salon Jeff Greenwald began to hear rumors that the Dalai Lama visited the ensemble Next generation. It was a pretty wild reputation, but an intrepid reporter knew that this famous monk owned a telescope as a child and was interested in cosmology as an adult. Because it was not so much section to imagine it as a fan of the most influential TV science fiction franchise.
The most interesting part of this rumor was the claim that when he personally visited Star Trek: Another generation set, the Dalai Lama posed for the picture with Brent Spinerbest known for playing Android, data. Greenwald almost came out of ways to run this reputation when he received an unexpected gift. Unnamed Voyager Staffer heard of a reporter who tried to put this story together and sent him the original photo through FedEx.
As soon as Greenwald got a photo, he found that the rumors were only half true. The picture actually shows that the Buddhist Munich’s accompaniment on a tour of the set Star Trek: Next generation And taking pictures with Brent Spiner (who was in full costume and make -up like data), but the Dalai Lama himself was not a sign. At that time, Greenwald thought it was a fairly fair bet that this iconic religious character must be a fan Next generation And that his busy program simply prevented him from personally traveling after the set.
While Jeff Greenwald had to work very hard to get this charming photo, many Star Trek fans had a much easier time to see this picture of the Dalai Lama. This is because the image was included in the release of “The Ensign command”. However, if you did not have these tapes from all over the pond, this picture is quite surprised and will still please fans who newly discover it every year.
While Gene Roddenberry was very cautious to include religion in Star Trek, a newer show as Strange new worlds They explored the more spiritual side of this famous franchise. However, as it turned out, even the golden age of the trek was attractive to no less than the Dalai Lama himself.
And this unexpected intersection of sci-fi and spirituality certainly lived to the franchise motto and boldly went where Roddenberry’s dream had never been before.
