Around 03:30 GMT on Wednesday, the sky throughout northern Europe was illuminated by an object that was through the air on fire.
“I immediately thought of a science fiction film where it looked like a troop formation about to attack,” said Simon Eriksson, a Malmo worker, to the Swedish state station.
The pyrotechnics were caused by a Space X Falcon 9 rocket that re -entered the atmosphere of the Earth. There are reports of sightings in Denmark, Sweden and England.
The rocket pieces crashed into Poland and, according to experts, they may also have landed in Ukraine.
Around 10:00, local time (09:00 GMT) This morning, Adam Borucki was surprised to find what seemed to be a carbonized tank that measures around 1.5 m for 1 m behind his warehouse in Komorniki, Poland .
The rubble seems to have damaged a lamp in the courtyard of the warehouse.
Borucki contacted the Police, who worked together with the Polish Space Agency Posa, determined that the unidentified object was debris of a Falcon 9 rocket, manufactured by Elon Musk Spacex’s company.
“We are investigating how the object ended in this place, but the important thing is that no one was harmed,” said Police spokesman Andrzej Borowiak.
According to the Polish Police, he discovered a similar piece of rubble in a forest near the Polish village.
Polsa has confirmed that “an uncontrolled re -entry of the second stage of the Falcon 9 rocket occurred between 04:46 and 04:48 of February 19, 2025, on Poland.”
The Spacex Falcon 9 rocket is used to transport people and useful loads to the Earth’s atmosphere. It is designed to be reusable.
The rocket that created this rubble was launched by Spacex from the Vandenberg Air Force base in California on February 1.
“The Tenant was supposed to have the atmosphere of the Earth in a controlled way and collide with the Pacific Ocean,” said Harvard University Astrophysicist, Dr. Jonathan McDowell, to the BBC.
“But the engine failed. We have seen it orbiting the earth during the last weeks and we anticipate a re -entry not controlled today, which is what people saw to burn in the sky.
“The rubble beat England to around 17,000 mph, then parts of Scandinavia then crashed in Eastern Europe to a few hundred miles per hour.”
Space discards of rockets and tenant satellites The atmosphere of the earth several times a month. In general, space waste pieces are completely burned by the atmosphere of the Earth, but the biggest piece can fall to the earth. According to Dr. McDowell, a large uncontrolled rocket re -entry is weird and has the potential to be dangerous.
“Until now, we have been lucky and nobody has been injured, but the more we put in the orbit of the earth, the more likely our luck is exhausted,” he said.
“This is the fourth incident recently with a Spacex Falcon that is causing concern. It seems that technical problems such as this engine failure are becoming more common.”
Until now, large pieces of rubble have been confirmed in Poland, but Dr. McDowell suspects that the pieces have crashed in western Ukraine, where comet light stripes in the sky “were clearly visible.”
“It is quite an omen of how our civilization is changing,” he added.
The BBC has approached Space X to comment.
