Mitch McConnell announces that it will not apply for re -election


The American senator Mitch McConnell has announced that he will not seek re -election in 2026 after a 40 -year career in Congress.

McConnell, 83, was the leader of the oldest party in the history of the Senate, But he resigned from republican leadership while facing health problems.

Despite supporting much of Donald Trump’s agenda during his first administration, McConnell has become a more vocal critic of the president while facing retirement at the end of his mandate.

“I have some pending issues to attend,” he said in a speech on the floor of the Senate who announced that his “current term in the Senate will be the last.”

In his speech, McConnell encouraged his fellow senators to use his constitutional powers at a time when Trump has tried to greatly expand the scope of the presidency.

McConnell has voted against Trump’s appointments to the majority of Senate Republicans by opposing Pete Hegseth for Defense Secretary, Tulsi Gabbard as director of National Intelligence and Robert F Kennedy JR for the Secretary of Health.

He stressed that Congress is a government coefficient branch for the president, and it was a fundamental responsibility to confirm federal officials that “have an authentic devotion to the rule of law above all.”

“The weight of our power to advise and consent has never been lost to me,” said McConnell, who had frustrated many agenda of a Democratic president in the legislative branch.

At the end of their speech, the senators and the staff applauded and gave him a standing ovation.

The Kentucky politician developed a reputation as a tacit and perpetual cunning spine on the side of the Democrats. Even when his party was in the minority, McConnell used arcana procedures and Rome political force to achieve sometimes seismic results.

In one of his most impressive maneuvers, he maintained the nomination of the president of President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court at the end of his second term.

During the Biden administration, McConnell took an aggressive position on Ukraine, becoming an open defender of the United States support, even when Trump and his Maga base requested an insolationist response.

While he was very criticized for folding and changing many of the norms of the Senate to boost his conservative agenda, the Republican for a long time emphasized the importance to respect the legislative body.

“I assure my colleagues that I will start with the great hope of resistance, resistance, the Senate as an institution,” said McConnell.
