A British tourist died while walking with a friend in the Himalayas mountains in northern India.
The two British men were walking in “extremely difficult land” near the town of Thathri in DharamShala when one of them was seriously injured, said the local emergency services.
The man was rescued and shot down by the mountain on a stretcher, but when he arrived at the hospital almost 24 hours later he was declared dead, rescuers said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said they were “supporting the family of a British man who died in India and is in contact with local authorities.”
According to the Times of India, the couple was walking through the Triand Trek, a popular route of approximately 7 km (4.3 miles) in the foothills of the Dhauladhar mountain range.
They were in their descent when one of the men fell and his friend sought the help of the nearby village, reports the newspaper.
Local rescuers, the Himachal Pradesh state disaster, said in X that the call to their aid had arrived at 18:00 on Sunday, and a team of 10 people had been sent by the mountain to look for The men.
“After four hours of trekking, the team located the victims at 10:30 pm with a hiker in critical condition. They assured the critical hiker on a stretcher and began the challenging descent along with their nightgown.
“The rough terrain and repeated crosses of a Rivuleto made extremely slow progress, which required almost two hours to cover only 100 meters.”
During the night, the team requested a backup, and more rescuers arrived in the morning.
“They continued transporting the victims, but they faced extreme difficulties due to the steep landscape, requiring multiple anchors of the stretcher.”
The man was finally taken to the hospital at 17:08 on Monday, but was declared dead upon arrival, the rescuers added. His friend was unharmed.
Local authorities in the Kangra district had contributed a temporary trekking prohibition in areas at great altitude, but the Times of India says that the two tourists did not know.
He said they had reached the snow line, the part of the mountain where the snow is on the ground throughout the year.
The victim has not yet been formally identified.
