The planes that fly between Australia and New Zealand have diverted as China performs a closely scrutinized military exercise in nearby waters that can involve living fire.
The rare presence of three Chinese naval ships in the Sea of Tasman has put both antipodean countries in recent days, and Australia calls it “unusual.”
The Australian airline Qantas told the BBC that “temporarily adjusted” the routes of its airplanes and other carriers have done the same.
China has said that exercise, which is carried out in international waters, agrees with international law.
According to the reports, the ships are now 340 nautical miles east of the coast of New Wales of Southern Australia, although it was said that they approached 150 nautical miles from Sydney at one time.
Australia and New Zealand have been closely monitoring the Chinese fleet, a frigate, a cruise and a supply truck, since last week, and have sent their own ships to observe them.
Earlier this week, New Zealand Defense Minister, Judith Collins, said that China had not informed them that they would send war ships to their region and “have not deigned to advise us about what they are doing in the Sea of Tasman “, according to The New Zealand Herald.
Meanwhile, Australia Defense Minister Richard Marles said the presence of ships “was not unprecedented, but it is an unusual event.”
The China Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Friday that they were doing naval training and exercises in “distant waters.”
“The exercises were carried out safely, standardly and at all times, according to relevant international laws and practices,” said spokesman Guo Jiakun.
Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the Chinese fleet issued an alert on Friday that they would begin to perform exercises that may imply living fire.
“This is an activity that has occurred in waters consisting of international law … there has not been an imminent risk of danger for any Australian active or New Zealand assets,” he said.
But Marles said the Chinese had not directly notified Australian officials when they contributed the alert.
“What China did was make a notification that I intended to participate in living fire, and with that I mean a transmission that was collected by airlines, literally commercial planes that flew through Tasman.” He told Broadcasting Corporation in Australiaadding that generally such notices would be given from 12 to 24 hours in advance.
According to the reports, on Friday a Emirates plane was informed about the exercise by the Chinese authorities, while it was still in the air, since it flew from Sydney to Christchurch. BBC is looking for confirmation.
In a statement to the BBC, Qantas confirmed that he had changed the routes of his planes flying through the Sea of Tasman and said he was continuously monitoring the airspace.
“We continue working with the Australian government and the broader industry to monitor the situation,” he added.
According to reports, Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand have done the same.
The drill arrives only days after Australia and China maintained a defense dialogue In Beijing, where they had discussed transparency and military communication, among other things.
The two countries have seen several recent tense maritime meetings.
Earl this monthCanberra said a Chinese combat plane had released flares in front of an Australian military plane while flying over the southern China Sea. Beijing said the plane had “intentionally” intentionally “to its airspace.
In May last year, Australia accused a Chinese combat plane of letting go of flares near a helicopter of the Australian Navy that was part of a UN Mission of the UN Yellow Sea.
AND In November 2023, Canberra accused Beijing Navy of using rash pulses in international waters against Japan, which results in Australian divers suffer injuries.
