Stockholm – The legend of the skate Tony Hawk once rejected half a million dollars in future royalties of the popular professional video game skater, and says it was the “best financial decision” of his life.
Hawk was offered $ 500,000 in a unique purchase offer for the use of his name and likeness for the Activision Pro Skater title, which was launched in 1999.
Speaking at the Techarena Technology Conference in Stockholm on Thursday, Hawk said that, when he received the proposal, “it didn’t seem like a real number to me.”
Finally, he decided to reject him, citing success both in his personal and professional life and to give him the impulse to run the risk and beat the offer.
“I had a family, I had just bought a new house and felt that I could pay the mortgage. And I thought it is going quite well in my life outside this video game project,” said Hawk.
“And then I thought I can give myself a luxury to take a risk. And so, that was the moment of luck, so I rejected it. That was absolutely the best financial decision of my life,” he added.
Instead, Hawk negotiated a royalty agreement under which he would receive a cut for each copy sold.
“That was a much better deal,” said Hawk, added: “It is probably one of the reasons why I am here today.”
Just after Hawk rejected the check, Activision mentioned a sequel to the game, which means that Hawk’s profits would continue.
The license agreement between Hawk and Activision, which is now owned by the Microsoft technological giant, operated for 16 years until 2015.
Ultimately, it was worth it: the Pro Skater franchise has generated More than $ 1.4 billion in sales Since its launch, shooting Hawk’s career.
The athlete has been skating since the 1970s and was widely considered the best skater in the world at the age of 16.
But it was not until the publication of his video game that became seriously famous. Today, his name is practically synonymous with skate and the culture that surrounds him.
