As the first phase of Alto El Fuego between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is destined to reach its end, once again it has been questioned.
After the last six hostages of Israel Vivos were released that were released in this phase, Israel must release more than 600 Palestinian prisoners in return, the greatest number will be released at once.
But that has now been indefinitely delayed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin NetanyahuWith his demand for Hamas to stop what he called his “cynical use of hostages for propaganda purposes.” Hamas has accused Israel of deliberately trying to interrupt the high fire agreement.
It is the last great blow on the path that is destined to lead to a permanent end of hostilities and the beginning of Gaza’s reconstruction.
Israel complained about chaotic scenes in one of the first transfers, saying that the physical security of hostages had been endangered. Then, Israel said that Hamas had broken the terms of the agreement by not releasing a civil hostage, Arbel Yehud.
In response, he delayed opening access for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to return to northern Gaza for 48 hours. That was resolved when Arbel Yehud was released in an additional installment before the next scheduled for the following Saturday.
Later, Hamas accused Israel for not living up to his commitments to allow heavy machinery, tents and caravans to Gaza. Then he said he would not carry out the next host delivery as scheduled.
That caused threats from both Netanyahu and the president of the United States, Donald Trump, that the whole war would resume in Gaza if the hostages were not released as agreed. With the watch working down, Hamas agreed to release them.
And just in recent days, the discovery that the body Hamas delivered on Thursday as that of Shiri drink It turned out not to be her. That triggered a new anger and shock in Israel, where Shiri’s images trying to protect their two young children while they were kidnapped on October 7, 2023, looks like the most powerful symbol of the horror of that day.
Netanyahu denounced Hamas for what he called a “cruel and evil violation” of the agreement. Once again, the high fire only remained at the last moment by Hamas providing another body within a day that this time really proved to be his.
All these incidents have demonstrated how fragile the process of high fire remains. They may also have contributed to the de facto conversations in the second phase, which will begin earlier this month, they have not yet launched. Time is running out, with the first phase that will end in a week.
Hamas has offered to launch the remaining hostages that are released in the second phase at once, but only if Israel takes out all his forces from Gaza and there is a permanent end for war.
Israel has demanded the complete disarmament of Hamas, which has so far rejected. The ceremonies administered by the stage in each hostage delivery, which Netanyahu has condemned so strongly, intends to demonstrate that it is still a force to take into account in Gaza.
In Israel, the voices about the correct demand that the government resumes its war against Hamas, while the families of the hostages, backed by much of Israel, say that ensuring the release of the remaining hostages is what matters beyond The rest.
Trump’s plan for Gaza has brought a new uncertainty to the equation. The third phase of Alto Fire is destined to put Gaza on the road to reconstruction and renewal.
The Arab states are trying to find a concrete alternative proposal in which the Palestinians would continue to live in Gaza while rebuilding, instead of being removed from the enclave as expected in the Trump plan.
Gaza’s future governance also remains a key conflict point, with Israel, Hamas, the Palestinian authority and Arab countries so far, until now, they seem to have contradictory proposals.
These problems will require difficult negotiations, which will be carried out in the midst of the constant risk of a return to war, for which some of both sides continue to advocate.
But for now, the mediators of Egypt, Qatar and the USA can have their work cut to obtain the first phase of the high fire on the line.
