The majority of USAID employees will be returned to the administrative permit by the Trump administration from midnight on Sunday.
Some 2,000 employees will also be dismissed in an effort of “strength reduction,” said the administrator’s office in an email to employees obtained by CBS News, the US news partner of the BBC.
The measure occurs weeks after President Donald Trump initially tried to eliminate thousands of USAID employees, but layoffs faced a legal challenge.
A judge had temporarily stopped the administration plan to gut the United States foreign aid agency, but ruled on Friday that the pause would not be permanent.
