Chile’s energy cut leaves millions without electricity

It is believed that millions of people do not have electricity in Chile after a great power cut nationwide.

According to the National Service for Prevention and Disaster Response (Senapred), an area that covers the majority of the country is affected, including the capital city, Santiago.

The exact scale of the interruption, which began earlier on Tuesday, is not yet known, but Senapred has said that it covers the regions of Arica and Parinacota in the north to the lakes in the south.

The Reuters news agency also reported that the world’s largest copper mine, hidden, has no energy, citing a source close to the matter.

In an X publication, the Santiago Metro operator said that his service had been temporarily suspended due to the ongoing blackout, with the stations evacuated and closed.

The Minister of Interior of Chile, Carolina Toha, also published in X to say that a meeting would be called to discuss the ongoing measures to restore services.

Senapred added that electricity companies throughout the impacted area were investigating the failure and trying to restart services.
