The Supreme Court orders a new trial for Oklahoma Death Row inmate

The United States Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Richard Glossip, an Oklahoma man in the death corridor.

The court ruled 5-2 in favor of Glossip, reversing a ruling of the Criminal Court of Oklahoma.

The measure occurs after the State Republican Attorney joined Glossip to ask for a new trial.

Glossip was convicted of the 1997 murder of the owner of a motel from the city of Oklahoma where he worked. He has had nine postponed execution dates and ate his “last meal” three times.

Judge Sonia Sotomayor wrote Tuesday’s opinion for the court and joined other liberal judges Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson. Brett Kavanaugh and Justice President John Roberts, both conservatives, also joined the opinion.

Judge Neil Gorsuch did not join the case.

“We conclude that the Prosecutor’s Office violated its constitutional obligation to correct the false testimony,” said Sotomayor.

Glossip has always maintained his innocence.

His boss, Barry Van Treese, owner of the Oklahoma City Motel, was hit until death in 1997.

Glossip colleague, Justin Sneed, was convicted of the murder, but said Glossip had told him to carry out the murder.

Since then it has been argued that prosecutors did not reveal that Sneed had been treated by a severe psychiatric condition.

Glossip was first sentenced in 1998, but that was revoked in 2001. He was sentenced again three years later.

In 2015, just a few steps from the execution chamber, its execution stopped to review lethal injection medications.

In 2023, the Supreme Court intervened after Oklahoma attorney requested a new trial.
