An agent of the United States Secret Service that jumped to the limousine of John F Kennedy when he was criticized in Dallas, and was photographed in famous photos of one of the most dramatic events in the history of the United States, died at the age of 93 years.
Clint Hill later became a more selling author, but was persecuted for decades because of Kennedy’s murder.
Hill died at his home in California on Friday, according to a statement from his publicist.
On November 22, 1963, he was assigned to protect the president’s wife, Jacqueline Kennedy.
Hill rode in a car behind Kennedy’s limousine when the first shot sounded.
He immediately hurried to the couple and began to climb to the back of the limousine while the shooting continued.
Hill’s actions during the murder were captured in Zapruder’s film, a homemade fans video that provided one of the best shooting recordings.
Hill, originally from North Dakota, served in the Army before joining the Secret Service in 1958.
He was awarded for his actions in Dallas and finally increased to become deputy director of the Secret Service.
However, the trauma he experienced during the murder led him to retire early from the agency in 1975, at the age of 43.
He had convinced that he could have saved Kennedy’s life and shortly after his retirement told CBS 60 minutes that he felt responsible.
“If I had reacted around five tenths of a faster second, maybe a faster second, it would not be here,” said Hill.
“Do you mean you would have arrived there and would have taken the shot?” The interviewer Mike Wallace asked.
“Yes, sir … that would have been well for me,” Hill replied.
“I am very blamed for that,” he said. “If I had returned in a different direction, I would have succeeded. It’s my fault.”
As the years passed, the former secret service agent later told a documentary, returned to Dallas, and finally concluded that he could not have saved Kennedy’s life.
Hill met the Lisa McCubbin journalist in 2009 and collaborated in a best -selling memory, Mrs. Kennedy and me.
It was the first of a series of books and Hill and McCubbin fell in love. The couple married in 2021.
A statement from his editor said that Hill had died at home with his wife by his side. There was no cause of death.
