New York doll singer David Johansen has died after fighting silently in cancer in stage 4 for several years, confirmed Fox News Digital.
Johansen’s wife, Mara Hennessey, told Fox News Digital that she died Friday in her “sunny room, surrounded by flowers and music, holding hands and our daughter, Leah.”
“We had a wonderful adventure of a life together. He was an extraordinary man. Very grateful that we made us public with news of his illness before his death, since the last weeks have been full of messages and love of family, friends and fans,” Hennessey shared.

In February, Mara and Leah shared that David was fighting cancer, and were looking for the support of their fans.
“David has been living with stage 4 cancer for several years. He underwent chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy and surgery and resisted all the side effects and consequences of the various treatments, all with his indomitable spirit and his sense of incomparable humor,” Mara said.
“We had a wonderful adventure of a life together. He was an extraordinary man.”
“He has been nourished by the love of his wife and daughter, while trying to avoid his friends, colleagues and fans and maintain his private problems. It has always been so.
“He states that it is because it is Norwegian half.”
Hennessey explained that the financial burden affected his family.

“Our family has reached the point where we need more support. We have accumulated a serious debt that takes care of our dear David and faced even more unmanageable expenses. This trying to be discreet is not sustainable,” he concluded.
Johansen’s daughter, Leah Hennessey, went to Instagram to share the sad news last month.

“David is a legend, but he is also my very really sick father,” he wrote along with a photo of him in his history of Instagram. “I have a lot to say, but I suppose I will publish a lot about this and I don’t have to say it now.

Leah also included a link to Sweet relief musicians background. The organization helps to raise money for musicians fighting with health problems.
His daughter explained on the website that, five years ago, Johansen’s cancer progressed and he had A brain tumor.
“There have been complications since then. He has never made public his diagnosis, since he and my mother Mara are generally very private people, but we are forced to share this now, due to the increasingly severe financial burden that our family faces,” says the website.

According to Leah, things got worse on Thanksgiving.

“To get things worse, the day after Thanksgiving, David fell down the stairs and broke his back in two places,” he wrote on the website.

Johansen underwent surgery, but Leah said: “David has been prostrate and incapacitated. Due to trauma, David’s disease has progressed exponentially and my mother took care of him 24 hours.”

Apart from New York dolls, Johansen is known for his alter ego, Buster Poindexter. In 1987, his song “Hot Hot Hot” was a success of the billboard.
