The father tries to block the euthanasia of the daughter in a case of historical Spanish

A young woman must testify in a Spanish court today in an attempt to persuade a judge to let her die voluntarily against her father’s wishes, in the first case of this type.

The 23 -year -old who wants to end her life is paraplegic due to the injuries suffered when she tried to take her life in 2022.

He has the support of the Regional Government of Catalonia after a guarantee and evaluation board of local euthanasia unanimously supported his decision in July 2024.

Euthanasia is the act of deliberately ending a person’s life to relieve suffering. It can be involuntary, for example, if a person is in a coma and cannot give their consent, or voluntary, as in this case.

The woman had to die in August, but the process was suspended at the last moment due to the legal objections raised by her father, with the support of the Christian lawyers of the campaign group (Christian lawyers).

“I feel misunderstood by my family, I feel alone and empty, this situation causes me a lot of suffering,” said the woman, according to documents related to the case cited by the Spanish media.

The legal representation of the Catalan government in the case has stated that “there has been no evidence of a scientific or expert nature to contradict the many medical reports that support the decision (die).”

However, the woman’s father has argued that she suffers from a personality disorder that affects her judgment and he has pointed out “the state’s obligation to protect people’s lives, especially the most vulnerable, as is the case of a young person with mental health problems.”

He has also said that she has responded well to the rehabilitation treatment.

Her legal representation has also affirmed that the young woman has changed her mind about undergoing euthanasia several times.

The prosecutor has not positioned himself regarding the case, but asks the judge to listen to the opinions of experts and the woman himself before making a decision.

Among those who must also testify in the Court in Barcelona today are a member of the Euthanasia Board who evaluated his case, a specialist in Neuro-Rehabilitation and a psychiatric specialist.

TO Euthanasia law was introduced in Spain in 2021But this is the first time that a case has gone to court for a judge to decide.

Last year, a magistrate in Barcelona rejected an attempt by a man to appeal against the euthanasia of his 54 -year -old son after being approved by the guarantee and evaluation board.
