Tonight’s speech is technically not a “state of the union.” Usually, they avoid this title this time, since the president has only been in office for a few weeks.
Interestingly, nothing in the Constitution requires a speech.
Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution, says that the “president from time to time will give information about the Congress about the State of the Union.”
President George Washington gave this type’s first speech in New York, but President Thomas Jefferson suspended the practice. I saw it too much as a crown speech.

The “State of the Union” was a written document until the beginning of the 20th century. It was then that President Woodrow Wilson revived the custom of speech after 112 years of latency.
President Calvin Coolidge was the first to pronounce a speech from the State of the Union by radio in 1923.
However, the radio tradition really found its balance in the 1930s.
Trump speech theme to the revealed Congress
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt dominated the radio with his “Firec Chatseside” during the Great Depression and World War II. That continued during his messages from the State of the Union.

President Harry Truman was the first to broadcast speech on television in 1947.
