It is feared that dozens of people in the Sudanese state of northern Darfur die after a strong bombing in a camp for displaced people.
The paramilitary fast support forces (RSF) attacked a market full of people in Abu Shouk, a camp on the outskirts of the city of El-Fafasher, for approximately two hours on Tuesday night, a local official told the BBC.
The camp is home to more than half a million displaced people and the assault on their market is the second in three days.
El-Fafasher is the last important city in Darfur under the control of the army and the RSF has been under siege for almost a year.
Tuesday’s attack against Abu Shouk took place at the busiest time of the day. The population of the camp are mostly Muslims, who observe the sacred month of Ramadan, and many were shopping in the market, preparing to break their fast during the day.
The bombing caused several injuries, ranging from slight to severe, said Dr. Ibrahim Nadyan, doctor of the El-Fafas operating hospital, to the BBC.
Abu Shouk was also bombarded by the RSF on Sunday, in an attack that killed six civilians, local health volunteers said.
The RSF has not commented on Sunday or Tuesday.
Since it broke out in April 2023, the war has killed tens of thousands of people, forced millions of their homes and left many facing the famine.
Both the RSF and the army have been accused of committing atrocities, and the RSF accused of committing a genocide in Darfur against the non -Arab groups of the region.
The conflict has divided the country, with the army controlling the north and the east, while the RSF contains most of the Darfur region in the west and parts of the south.
In recent weeks, the army has resumed parts of Jardtum and its surroundings of the RSF.
