A bucktoothed flame that spends their days comforting children with chronic diseases in a North Carolina camp founded by Nascar Royalty has been crowned the oldest flame in the world in captivity.
At 27 years and more than 250 days, I call the selfie and curled up lover called whitetop detroned dolai llama, Guinness World Records announced last week. Dalai lived in a ranch in Albuquerque and was announced as the oldest in 2023 shortly after his 27th birthday.
WhiteTop was donated to the Victoria camp in 2006, only two years after the race driver, Kyle Petty, son of Nascar Great Richard Petty – And his family founded the camp in honor of Petty’s own son, Adam, who was 19 when he was killed in a 2000 accident while practicing for a race.

The free camp throughout the year is in 84 acres in the small hometown of Randleman, North Carolina, about 75 miles west of Raleigh. It is designed for children with conditions that include cancer, kidney and cardiac disease, cerebral palsy, bifid spine and a variety of neurological and physical disabilities.
Whitetop has become known for its relaxed, sweet and empathic personality. His reference is to be still while the campists caress him, which can comfort the children and give them an important sensory contribution, said Billie Davis, director of the barn of the camp.
“You can really help campers get out of their shell when they interact with him,” he said. “At first it can be a bit intimidating, but once they approach him and love him and caress him, they simply realize how sweet it is.”

One of his best friends is A miniature cow of highlands The so-called Gus-Gus, which tends to forget WhiteTop is a flame and enjoys jumping on him. Whitetop also likes to roll in fresh wood chompa, SOADED ALFALFA and POSS for selfies.
“If you try to take a picture of him from one side, he doesn’t like it,” Davis said. “He, like Scoot there, will try to get his face from a side profile to be as if he were walking.”
Davis attributes Whitetop’s long life to great veterinary care, in addition to simply loving his work.
The average life of a flame is 15 years, according to the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance.

WhiteTop has developed arthritis in its twilight years, but otherwise it is very healthy, Davis said. And the only times the flame gets angry is when Gus-Gus, along with two miniature donkeys called Jed and Jethro, leave it alone.
Stephanie Wilkerson, 33, was for the first time at the family weekend of the camp in 2006 after she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She said she was initially a little nervous for Whitetop, but soon realized that caressing him and giving her hugs made her feel better.
“When I started stroking it more and more, I relaxed more,” said Wilkerson, who lives in Thomasville, North Carolina.

With the new fame of Whitetop in longevity, the camp has begun to sell limited editing t -shirts that show white with sunglasses and words, “I still spit.” The income goes to the camp.
Although Davis said that WhiteTop would like people not knowing that not all flames spit.
“Usually, the flames only spit when they are scared, uncomfortable or territorial about something,” he said. “And he loves his work so much that he does not.”
