Sudan is taking the United Arab Emirates (EAU) to the International Court of Justice (ICI), accusing him of supporting the Paramilitary Fast Subscriber forces of Sudan (RSF) in the Civil War.
Khartum argues that the EAU are “accomplices in the genocide” of the Masalit community, in western Darfur, through their military, financial and political support for the RSF.
In response, the EAU have strongly rejected the accusations of Sudan, qualifying the case as a “cynical advertising trick”, and saying that it will seek an immediate dismissal.
Since the war began in April 2023, both the RSF and the Sudanese army have been accused of committing atrocities.
The RSF has been accused of committing a genocide in Darfur, against non -Arab groups in the region.
According to the AFP news agency, the submission of Sudan to the ICJ says: “The United Arab Emirates feed the rebellion and supports the militia that has committed the crime of genocide in western Darfur.
“The United Arab Emirates must make a complete reparation for the injury caused (by) their internationally unfair actions, including the payment of reimbursement to the victims of war.”
An unidentified EAU official said that “the accusations presented by the SAF representative in the CIJ lack a legal or objective base, which represents another attempt to distract from this calamitous war.”
UN experts who monitor the embargo of weapons in Darfur have previously described the accusations of the US smuggling weapons to the RSF through Chad as credible.
CIJ’s advisory opinion is not legally binding, but it still has a significant political weight.
The war of almost two years has devastated Sudan, with tens of thousands of dead and more than 12 million displaced people, feeding one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.
Earlier this week, the heavy bombardment in a camp for displaced people in northern Dafur left dozens of feared people.
A market full of people in Abu Shouk, a camp on the outskirts of the city of El-Fasher, was attacked for approximately two hours on Tuesday night, a local official told the BBC.
