Syrian and loyal forces of Assad in mortal confrontations in Latakia

Syrian forces loyal to the new government in Damascus have been involved in strong fighting with remains of the Assad expelled regime in a coastal area in the northwest of the country.

According to state television, at least 13 soldiers have been killed in clashes in the province of Latakia, near an air base controlled by the Russian.

A curfel has been announced until Friday morning.

They are some of the most violent attacks on the forces linked to the Islamist government of Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December.

The confrontations continue in coastal areas that form the heart of the Alauita community and are a strength of the Assad family.

Alawite activists said their community had undergone violence and attacks since Assad fell, particularly in Rural Homs and Latakia.

The Sana state agency reported that the “huge military reinforcements” were directed to the city of Jableh.

On Thursday afternoon, the STEP news agency based in Syria, informed that the forces aligned by the government had killed “about 70” former combatants of the regime, while more than 25 others were captured in Jableh and Wenance.

The AFP news agency said that 28 Leyal gunmen to Assad were killed, citing monitors, adding that government forces were using helicopters to attack objectives.

The BBC has not been able to verify the figures.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense of Syria, Colonel Hassan Abdul Ghani, issued a warning to Assad’s loyal ones through state media.

“Thousands have chosen to deliver their weapons and return to their families, while some insist on fleeing and dying in defense of murderers and criminals. The choice is clear: place your weapons or face your inevitable destiny,” he said.

The region has become a great security challenge for interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa.

It also faces resistance in the South, where there have been clashes with the forces of Druss in recent days.

Earl this week, Syrian Foreign Minister told the global chemical weapons vigilant dog that the new government was committed to destroying the remaining reserves produced below the Assad.

The Assad government denied having used chemical weapons during the 14 -year civil war, but the activists accused him of carrying out dozens of chemical attacks.
