DR Congo offers a $ 5 million reward for the arrest of the AFC leader

The Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has offered a reward of $ 5 million (£ 4 million) for the help of arresting three leaders of a rebel group that has seized much of the east of the country this year.

Corneille Nangaa, former head of the Electoral Commission of Dr. Congo, now leads the Congo River Alliance, including the M23 Rebel Group. Great demonstrations in cities have been directed under the control of the group.

The reward is also offered for the leaders of the M23 Sultani Makenga and Bertrand Bisimwa.

Last year, the three men were prosecuted in absence by a military court and gave him death sentences for betrayal.

A $ 4 million reward (£ 3) was also offered for the arrest of their accomplices.

But the chances of being arrested seem scarce.

In recent weeks, the army has not been rival for the rebels supported by Rwanda who have captured large parts of the DR Congo rich in minerals, including the two largest cities in the region: rubber and bukavu.

Then, President Félix Tshisekedi has focused on trying to build international pressure for Rwanda in front of sanctions to support the rebels.

Last year, a UN Report reported that up to 4,000 Rwanda troops were working with the M23 in Dr Congo.

Thousands of people have been killed during the fighting and hundreds of thousands left without refuge after fleeing their homes.

The Congolese government is also looking for US support in exchange for access to its minerals.

Dr. Congo accuses Rwanda of trying to take control of his minerals, which include gold and coltan, used in electronic consumer products, such as mobile phones and computers.

In response to the reports that Dr. Congo was offering access to minerals in exchange for military aid to fight against the M23 rebels, the presidential spokeswoman Tina Salama said in X last month That President Tshisekedi was inviting the United States “whose companies obtained strategic raw materials from Rwanda, materials that feel the RDC and are introduced from contraband to Rwanda” to buy them in the Congolese: the “legitimate owners.”

Ruanda denies the looting of minerals of Dr. Congo.

He no longer denies having supported the M23, but says he is trying to prevent the conflict in Dr Congo from spilling in his own territory.

Rwanda also accuses the Congolese government of working with a different armed group in Dr Congo, which is linked to those responsible for the 1994 Rwanda genocide, in which some 800,000 people, mostly ethnic tutsis were massacred.

Both the M23 and Rwanda government are led by Tutsis.

The Congolese government denies working with the FDLR group accused by Rwanda of being a “genocidal militia.”
