The new document shines light for life and heritage Raquel WelchIncluding how its Bolivian ethnicity affected her iconic Hollywood career.
“I think it is really important to admit that Raquel Welch was originally Raquel Tejada,” says Brian Eugenio, cultural historian at Princeton University, in the new CW documentary called I’m Raquel Welch.
The documentary, which premiered on Saturday, March 8, claims that Welch – who died in 2023 at the age of 82 – was told to basically hide his ethnicity because of his beginning career in Hollywood.
“She said they wanted to change her hair, her look, her name,” Gregory Navathe director who worked with Welch American family, He says in the film. “Her manager at that time said,” No, you don’t want to come out as Hispanic. “They wanted to change their first name from Raquel to, I think, Debbie Welch. Very in The Sandra Dee, Doris Day Tradition, you know. But she refused.”

“Her father was a structural engineer who was a Bolivian immigrant to the United States who married an English woman (Josephine Sarah Hall), and was so brought up as it was fully aware that it was Bolivian, ”Eugenio continues in the document. “When she tells the story, her father refused to speak Spanish in the house because he didn’t want his children to have an accent.”
In Welch, he discusses his identity with his own words and says that the “part of me that I missed” grew up. “The part of me that was missing was the part of me that my father decided to amputate from our lives,” she continued.
The sound of the late actress also represents her admission that she did not think she would go very far in Hollywood if she insisted to refer her to her native name.
“If you kept your native name, do you think you would be able to go so far in Hollywood?” The interviewer asks Welch in the sound. “If I were Raquel Tejado, not a chance in hell, no.” By no means, ”Welch replied.
