Romania’s central electoral authority has banned Calin Georgescu, a populist candidate and a favorite, will be executed in May The presidential elections return to execute.

Georgescu, who won the first round of the canceled presidential elections of Romania last year, was arrested by the country’s main prosecutors in February.

The Constitutional Court of Romania made the unprecedented movement to annul the elections two days before the runoff on December 8 after the victory of Georgescu in the first round. He had surveyed in a single digit and declared zero campaign expense, according to Associated Press. Accusations of Russian interference and electoral rapes quickly emerged. After the cancellation of the elections, prosecutors initiated an investigation into the alleged financing fraud of the campaign, as well as an alleged anti -Semitism and hate speech.

The Trump administration has criticized Romania for canceling last year’s presidential elections, with Vice President JD Vance alleging that the court ruling was based on “flimless suspicions” and “enormous pressure” of Romania’s neighbors.

Vance said in December: “Romania directly canceled the results of a presidential election based on the clarifies suspicions of an intelligence agency and enormous pressure from its continental neighbors.”

He also warned European leaders who cannot win a “democratic mandate” by “censoring their opponents or putting them in jail”, or “ignoring their basic electorate in questions such as who can be part of our shared society.”

“For many of us on the other side of the Atlantic, it is increasingly similar to the old and entrenched interests that hide behind the ugly words of the Soviet era such as erroneous information and misinformation, those who simply do not like the idea that someone with an alternative point of view could express a different opinion or, God does not come, vote differently, or even worse, win a choice,” Vance said.

Georgescu, a firm critic of NATO and Western support for Ukraine, has caused controversy in the past for describing Romanian fascist and nationalist leaders of the 1930s and 1940s as national heroes, according to AP.

He has also praised Russian President Vladimir Putin In the past as “a man who loves his country”, and has called Ukraine “an invented state.”
