Romanian Popist of the extreme right Calin Georgescu Appeals against the Survey Prohibition

The Populist Romanian of the extreme right, Calin Georgescu, has appealed against the decision of the Central Electoral Office (BEC) of the country to prohibit him from participating in the presidential elections of May.

The judges of the Constitutional Court will meet on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the appeal of Georgescu, and a final ruling must be issued on Wednesday night.

The BEC rejected its candidacy on Sunday after a 10-4 vote, saying that it did not “comply with the conditions of legality,” as Georgescu “violated the obligation to defend democracy.”

Last year, the court annulled the first round of the November vote, in which Georgescu was first, after intelligence revealed that Russia had been involved in 800 Tiktok accounts that supported him.

In his appeal, Georgescu said the “BEC exceeded its legal powers.” He also argued that the decision of the Constitutional Court on the November elections should not be related to his candidacy for the next vote in May.

In a publication on social networks, Georgescu also described the prohibition as a “direct blow to the heart of democracy worldwide.”

The decision of the electoral office caused disturbances in Bucharest on Sunday night. The confrontations broke out between the police and the GEORGESCU supporters who had met in their thousands outside the offices of the BEC.

The BBC saw at least one turned car, and the windows of the neighboring bars broke. At least four people were arrested. More protests are expected on Monday and beyond.

Georgescu published a video on social networks thanking the Romanian people, but added that “we should not give birth to violence or other forms of this type compared to how last night. We are moving forward with great confidence for the future of this country.”

George Simion, an ally of Georgescu and the leader of the opposition alliance of the extreme right to unite the Romanians (Aur), the second largest game in Parliament, said Romania on Monday was “the middle of a coup d’etat.”

In a video on Sunday night, George Simion asked “those who committed the blow to be bound in public for what they did … if you like Calin Georgescu or not, he is the man for whom the Romanians voted.”

The Romanian attorney general has opened a case against the simion for the instigation of violence, and on Monday he sent the comments, saying that he was using a “metaphor.”

On February 26, Georgescu was arrested for interrogating his way to register as a candidate in the May elections, which led to tens of thousands of Romanians to march in the streets of Bucharest in protest.

Georgescu, a fierce critic of the EU and NATO, left almost any part of last year to lead the first round two weeks ago in the midst of Russian interference accusations. Since then he has seen some support from the Trump administration.

Last month, American vice president JD Vance accused Romania of annulling the “weak suspicions” of Romanian intelligence and the pressure of his neighbors.

And Trump’s advisor Elon Musk, published in X, saying: “How can a judge end democracy in Romania?”
