The trial in the Federal Court of Manhattan will begin with the jury selection on Monday, Reuters reported.

Amirov, Omarov and a third suspect, Khalid Mehdiyev by Yonkers, New York, were charged by the Department of Justice In early 2023.

“A Federal Court in New York slowed today the murder for rent and money laundering charges against three members of a criminal organization in Eastern Europe for consigning the murder of an American citizen who has been attacked by Iran’s government for speaking against the human rights abuse of the regime,” said the Department of Justice at that time.

“The victim in this case was attacked to exercise the rights to which all American citizens are entitled. The victim advertised the human rights abuses of the Iranian government; the discriminatory treatment of women; the suppression of participation and democratic expression; and the use of arbitrary prison, torture and execution,” said the then general of the matrix, Merrick Garland.

Mehdiyev was arrested in 2022 after they found him driving for Alinejad’s Brooklyn neighborhood with a loaded rifle and dozens of rounds of ammunition. Alinejad told Associated Press at that time that the authorities told her that the man was looking for her, and that a home security video had caught him hanging out of his door.

Mehdiyev also declared himself innocent, but the state of his judgment is not clear, according to Reuters.

“Mr. Omarov is presumed innocent,” said his lawyer, Elena Fast, to the news agency.

“I am very excited to join the public trial as a witness to testify against those who were hired by the Islamic Republic to kill me,” Alinejad told Reuters. “It’s as if they had given me a second life.”
