The upper columnist of the Washington Post, Ruth Marcus, resigned, accusing the newspaper Executive Director and editor Will Lewis to kill his column that criticized the owner Jeff Bezos’s Mandate to change opinion columns to focus on libertarian feelings.
In a letter obtained by NPRMarcus announced his resignation as an associated columnist and editor after four decades of work for the newspaper.
“Jeff’s announcement that the opinion section will not publish opinions that deviate from the pillars of individual freedoms and free markets threaten to break the confidence of readers that columnists are writing what they believe, not what the owner has considered acceptable,” Marcus wrote in the renunciation letter.
Marcus also explained that the freedom of columnists to write about the issues they choose has been decreased.

“No Will of No … execute the column that I respectfully wrote dissident of Jeff’s edict, something that I have not experienced in almost two decades of column writing, stresses that the traditional freedom of columnists to select the issues they wish to address and say what they think has been dangerously eroded,” he wrote.
Marcus’s most recent column was titled “Trump 2.0: The first two more harmful weeks in presidential history”, published on February 4. She argued: “Trump’s second mandate is about reducing the power and reach of the government.”
According to NPR, a Washington Post spokesman sent a statement about Marcus’s departure.
“We are grateful for Ruth’s important contributions to Washington Post in the last 40 years,” Marcus said.
Washington Post employees sent a letter to the owner Jeff Bezos urging him to address the problems of the document.
“We respect your decision to leave and wish you the best.” The publication added.
The publication did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s Request for comments.
Marcus’s departure occurred after the owner of the Washington Post, Bezos, recently announced some important changes on the Outlet opinion page. In addition, he said that the editor of the opinion section will resign as the changes introduce.

“We are going to write every day in the support and defense of two pillars: personal freedoms and free markets. We will also cover other issues, but the views that oppose these pillars will be published by others.” Bezos wrote in Xannouncing the decision.
“I am from America and for the United States, and proud to be like this. Our country did not arrive here because it is typical. And a large part of the success of the United States has been freedom in the economic sphere and anywhere else. Freedom is ethical, minimizes coercion, and practice, drives creativity, invention and prosperity,” Bezos shared.
The paper was attentive after Bezos stopped the editorial page From supporting former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024, which leads several employees to leave the newspaper.

Employees fled the position after the publisher Page did not support Harris. Former Jennifer Rubin columnist left the newspaper in the midst of the consequences of support, as well as the editor in general Robert Kagan.
