Keith Thurman (23-1, 23 kos) made his successful return to the ring with a technical knockout of the third round of Brock Jarvis (22-2, 20 kos) on Wednesday night at the Hordern Pavilion, Sydney.
The former WMB WELTER weight champion and the 36 -year -old OMB Thurman, dropped Jarvis twice in the third round with great shots at the head. Referee Will Soulos stopped the fight after the second fall. The official time of the arrest was at 2:19 of the round.
In the first fall, ‘One Time’ Thurman landed a right hand to Jarvis’ head that sent him hard. He hit the count when he rose again, but looked in poor condition when the action restarted.
Keith then went for death, unloading Jarvis and hit him with a left hook in the head. The referee Souls immediately stopped the fight because Brock was not going to get up from this demolition.
In the first round, Thurman did not throw almost anything, moving around the ring, trying to stay out of the reach of the youngest and powerful jarvis of 27 years. In the middle of the round, Jarvis ran to Thurman, nailing him with repeatedly powerful body shots that clearly bothered the former Welter weight champion.
Jarvis carried in a left hook that barely lost Thurman’s head in the seconds of the round. That was a photo that would have caused harm if it had been connected.
Thurman landed two hard -body shots in the second round that caught Jarvis’s attention, seeming to hurt him a little. The Australian seemed tentative after being beaten with those blows, and was not as aggressive as he had been in the previous round.
Even so, Keith did not do much to separate from the toughest shots with which Brock hit him. You could see the big difference in youth between the two in this round. Thurman looked like a much older person.
In the third round, Thurman stalked Jarvis around the ring, throwing powerful right but very slow and left hooks. ‘Once’ then he caught Jarvis against the ropes and landed a perfectly placed right hand to put it hard on the canvas. Surprisingly, Brock recovered from the fall, but did not seem in any condition of fighting. Thurman went after him and ended the work with a left hook that put him on the canvas.
The fight was Thurman’s first in more than three years since February 5, 2022, and seemed considerably slower than in his last contest against Mario Barrios that year. Thurman has a lot of his game in terms of hand and mobility speed from then on, that he will not return.
With this victory over Jarvis, Thurman is expected to face the former Junior Junior weight champion, Tim Tszyu, in the summer in Australia. Tszyu has lost its last two fights, and comes from a vicious defeat in the third round against the FIB Bakhram Murtazaliev champion.
You would have to favor Tszyu about Thurman in that fight for the slow and old Keith tonight. The lack of speed and work rate would put Thurman at the mercy of almost any junior medium weight of the 15 best. He has lost too much of his game to overcome those of 154 pounds of higher level. Based on his performance tonight, I can’t think of any remarkable contender that Thurman can defeat.
