‘Huawei lobbyists’ held in raids in Belgium on the corruption of the EU

The Belgian police have raided several places in the country as part of an investigation into corruption within the European Parliament.

Prosecutors said the alleged corruption was “under the appearance of commercial lobbying”, and that several people had been arrested to interrogate.

According to officials, the Local Police also sought an address in Portugal in relation to the case.

The Belgian newspaper Le Soir said that the investigation was linked to the Chinese technological giant Huawei and its activities in Brussels since 2021. The BBC has approached Huawei to comment.

“Corruption was supposedly practiced and very discreetly from 2021 to the present, under the appearance of commercial lobbying and taking various forms, such as compensation for political positions or excessive gifts, such as food and travel expenses, or regular invitations to football coincidences,” the prosecutor’s office explained.

Le Soir informed that several people suspected of being lobbyists who worked for Huawei were arrested, for the alleged bribery of the current or previous members of the European Parliament (MEP) to promote the company’s commercial policy.

A police source told the AFP news agency that they were not among those arrested on Thursday.

A total of 21 raids were carried out in Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia, the prosecutor’s office told the newspaper.

The investigation focuses on “active corruption within the European Parliament”, as well as the “falsification and use of counterfeit documents”, all within the framework of a “criminal organization,” said the prosecutor’s office, and added that he was also looking to discover possible money washes.
