Russian President Vladimir Putin said he agreed with the idea of a high fire in Ukraine, but that “questions” remained the nature of a truce when he established a series of difficult conditions.
The Russian president was responding to A PLAN FOR A HIGH FIRE OF 30 DAYSthat Ukraine agreed earlier this week after conversations with the United States.
The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, described Putin’s response to the plan as a “manipulator” and requested more sanctions from Russia.
Meanwhile, the United States placed more sanctions on the Russian oil, gas and banking sectors.
Speaking at a press conference in Moscow on Thursday, Putin said about the proposal of Alto El Fuego: “The idea is correct, and we support it, but there are questions that we must discuss.”
A high fire should lead to “a lasting peace and eliminate the root causes of this crisis,” Putin said.
“We need to negotiate with our American colleagues and partners,” he said. “Maybe I have a call with Donald Trump.”
Putin added: “It will be good for the Ukrainian side to achieve a high 30 -day fire.
“We are in favor, but there are nuances.”
Putin said that one of the dispute areas is the Kursk region of Russia, where Ukraine launched a military incursion last year and captured some territory.
He said Russia was completely back in Kursk’s control, and said Ukrainian troops “have been isolated.”
“They are trying to leave, but we are in control. His team has been abandoned.”
“There are two options for Ukrainians in Kursk: surrender or die.”
On some of his questions about how the fire would work, Putin asked: “How will those 30 days be used? For Ukraine to mobilize?
“Who will give the order to end the fighting? At what cost? Who decides who has broken any high fire, more than 2,000 km? All those questions need a meticulous work on both sides. Who dicks it?”
Putin “does not say not directly,” Zelensky said in his night video direction, but “in practice, he is preparing a rejection.”
“Putin, of course, is afraid to tell President Trump directly that he wants to continue this war, wants to kill the Ukrainians.”
The Russian leader had established so many previous conditions “that nothing will work at all,” Zelensky said.
After Putin’s comments and Zelensky’s response, there is now a clear division between the positions of both sides.
Ukraine wants a two -stage process: a high fire and then talks about a long -term agreement.
Russia believes that the two processes cannot separate and all problems must be decided in a single agreement. Both parties seem happy to argue their differences.
Ukraine believes that he can press Russia, painting him as a reluctant pacifier, playing for time. Russia also believes that he now has the opportunity to raise his fundamental concerns, about the expansion of NATO and the sovereignty of Ukraine.
But this presents a problem for Donald Trump. He has made it clear that he wants a fast result, ending the fight in days.
And at this time, Putin doesn’t seem to want to play ball.
Speaking at the White House after Putin’s comments, Trump said he would “love” to know the Russian leader and hoped Russia “did the right thing” and accept the truce of 30 days.
“We would like to see Russia’s fire,” he said.
Speaking previously at a meeting at the Oval office with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump told journalists that he had already discussed details with Ukraine.
“We have been arguing with lands of Ukraine and land pieces that would remain and lose, and all the other elements of a final agreement,” Trump said.
“Many of the details of a final agreement have been discussed.”
On the subject of Ukraine that joins the NATO Military Alliance, Trump said: “Everyone knows what the answer to that is.”
The new sanctions on oil and Russian gas occurred when the Trump administration further restricted access to US payment systems, which makes it difficult for other countries to buy Russian oil.
Meanwhile, Putin met the special envoy of the United States Steve Witkoff behind closed doors in Moscow.
Earlier in the day, Kremlin Yuri Ushakov assistant rejected the High Fire Proposal presented by the United States.
On Wednesday, Putin visited the Kursk region of Russia, dressed symbolically with military fatigue. Later, Russia said he recovered the key city of Sudzha.
