Sixty -six people voted in favor of the resolution instead of 43 no; Eight of the Yays were Democrats, who have been criticized by LGBTQ+ defenders.

“The change in how the Democrats are positioning themselves in issues related to trans rights is worrying,” said Thursday, Equality Executive Director Michigan, Erin Knott. “It is time to act decisively to take a firm position and make it clear that we will fight to protect the LGBTQ+ community no matter what, and unfortunately we are not seeing that same vigor we did even last year.”
“We all want sports to be fair, and athletes are safe,” Knott added. “That is why MHSAA already has rules about who can participate in different sports at different levels in a variety of problems. They already have an established process and are experts in regards to sports in schools. They do not need politicians in Lansing to cancel their experience with a prohibition of the single blanket.”

And I think we, as voters, are looking for legislators who address those problems and not in marginalized communities of scapegoat.”
“The Democratic Party chose a different form of what we would normally think they would do,” said Jeffrey Pienela, president of Muskegon Pride, a LGBTQ+defense organization.

“I want you to think about what it means to be a child. Discover who you are trying to find a place to belong. Learn confidence through the support of your classmates and mentors … Now imagine, instead of adults, adults, by your own government, that you are the problem. What to practice sports, make friends and be yourself wrong. That the community wanted to support you, instead, it is determined by yourself that it is determining you.
“I know what it is to be a queer child, and it is alone. I know what our non -binary legislator is to be, and it is to isolate and dehumanize. This resolution is not about equity. It is not about protecting women’s sports. It is not about security, because there is no threat. There is no threat.”
However, the Alabat representative Alabat, a Democrat who was against most of his party in the vote, offered an alternative.
“We want to make sure there is a fair environment … to compete. And I will be honest, that is where it comes from to me. The people of my district, definitely, I think, agree with that feeling …”. Alabat representative Ferhat said. “I would prefer to prioritize conversations about affordability, around housing. I would prefer that these conversations are at the forefront instead of resolutions like this. But you already know, again, for me, it is a problem of equity and my district has very strong opinions about these things.”
