Newt Giningrich: The victory of Trump-Johnson-Thune budget

He continuous resolution passage Maintaining the open government was a remarkable example of the revolutionary movement through which we live.

Traditionally, a continuous resolution requires a bipartisan agreement to overcome the Senate.

Republican leaders gather with Democratic leaders to discuss it. And the continuous resolution becomes much more expensive, and earns much more ideological language.

After the 2024 elections, many alleged experts said that President Donald Trump would have difficulty obtaining legislation through the Republican majority of the extraordinarily narrow chamber, or beyond the 60 votes threshold of the Senate.

The Republicans of the Chamber have been in agitation for a decade. The speaker John Boehner retired in early October 2015. His successor, the speaker Paul Ryan, announced that he would not run again in mid -2018. There was a defeat of 40 seats in those mid -period elections. Then, President Kevin McCarthy worked for four years to grow again to a republican majority, but a small and bitter faction simply caused his accommodation to be unsustainable. McCarthy took 15 to win the rent. Then, he was forced by the same bitter dissidents on October 3, 2023.

Finally, President Mike Johnson emerged as the consensus candidate for the speaker after three high profile members could not win 218 votes. As Johnson had not been in leadership, he represented a huge leap in responsibility. This led many to believe that I could not control the office, which had finally forced Boehner, Ryan and McCarthy.

The speaker Johnson has been much more successful, and much more strategic, than anyone expected. He also decided early that he could only be effective as an ally of President Trump.

The leader of the majority of the Senate, John Thune, was a veteran of the House of Representatives who has turned 20 in the Senate. At 64, it is a younger generation than former leader Mitch McConnell. Thune has proven to be a good partner for President Trump and President Johnson. The three have worked hard to get to the same page and work together to do things.

If he had told any call on January 20 that Republicans could obtain a continuous resolution of seven months to keep the government open during the rest of the fiscal year through the Chamber with only Republican votes, he or she probably would not have believed him. If I had told them later that the bill would be difficult to undermine the Senate Democrats, they would have thought they were dreaming. Finally, if he told them that President Johnson, President Trump and the leader of The majority Thune would overcome the Democrats and give them no choice but to approve the continuous resolution or close the government, experts would have discarded control of control.

However, with the help of the Director of Management and Budget Russ Vought, President Trump executed what would have been called to chess a fork.

They could all vote. If the Senate Democrats did this, the Republicans could not overcome the filibuster, so the government will close. In this case, facing President Trump could have been a political victory for his base. But I would not play well with the rest of the country.

Then, the Democrats realized that President Trump could reduce more programs and remodel the bureaucracy even more under a closing scenario than he could approve the bill, which they thought they already granted him too much power.

Then, the election of the Democrats became approved a bill that gave President Trump more authority to reduce the government, or stop the bill and give him even more authority.

President Trump, President Johnson and the leader of the majority Thune played this round brilliantly and won a great victory.

They also demonstrated that they could approve tax cuts, deregulation and the other priorities on which President Trump and Republicans campaigned in 2024.

This was a great victory with huge implications for the future.
