At least 12 people were killed after a plane crashed on the Caribbean coast of Honduras on Monday night, authorities said.
The plane, operated by the Honduran airline Lanhsa, crashed into the sea in a minute of takeoff from the island of Roatán.
The Police and Fire Department of the Honduran National Police said separately that five people had been rescued, while a person is not yet.
The cause of the accident is not yet known, but the mayor of Roatán told local media that it was not for the weather, which was normal. The Honduran civil aeronautics agency said an investigation was underway.
The Jetstream 32 plane had taken off from the Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport of the island at 18:18 local time (00:18 GMT on Tuesday), and was destined for the Golosón International Airport in La Ceiba in the Honduran continent.
The civil aviation official Carlos Padilla said, cited by the AFP news agency, that the plane “made an abrupt turn to the right of the track and fell into the water.”
In a statement in social networks, the Government expressed “solidarity” with the families of the victims.
“The Honduras government deeply laments the tragic accident in Roatán and joins the national duel,” he added.
After the accident, the Honduran President, Xiomara Castro, “immediately activated” the emergency committee of the country, composed of all emergency services, including the military, the police, the Fire Department, the Red Cross and the Ministry of Health.
Writing in X, he said that the committee team was “working tirelessly” to provide assistance.
“May God protect people’s lives,” Castro added.
The videos shared by officials on social networks showed rescue teams that worked in the dark along a rocky coast, with small boats and stretchers.
In a publication on X accompanied by photos, the Honduran armed forces said that survivors with injuries were taken to a hospital in the city of San Pedro Sula by air force planes.
According to local media reports, among the dead was the well -known Honduran musician Aurelio Martinez Suazo.
Suazo was a member of Garifuna, a town of indigenous and Afro-caribbean mixed ancestry originated by the island of San Vicente that has a different musical style.
