Edward James, 63, was declared dead at 8:15 pm in a state prison in Florida near the city of Starke. Before being executed, he said he did not want to give a final statement, according to Associated Press.
A jury voted 11-1 to sentence James to death after he declared himself guilty of the murders of September 19, 1993, of Toni Neuner, 8, and his grandmother, Betty Dick, 58.
James’s final appeals to their execution were denied by the Supreme Court of the United States Earlier on Thursday, which allowed his death sentence to advance.

When the attack took place, James had been renting a room in Dick’s house, which was about 10 miles north of Orlando. Neuner and three other children were at home on the night of the mortal attack, although the other three children were not damaged.
Before returning to his room at home, the judicial records showed that James drank up to 24 beers and some spirits, and took LSD.
Neuner was raped and strangled until death, while Dick was stabbed 21 times. After killing them, James stole the women’s jewels and his car, then led Bakersfield, California, where he was arrested on October 6, 1993.
James admitted both crimes during a video recorded with the police.

Several appeals arguing that James had cognitive problems that should protect him from the execution were presented before the state and federal courts, but all were denied.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court of Florida He rejected a discussion of James’s lawyers that their use of drugs and alcohol for a long time combined with head injuries and a heart attack in 2023 led to a “mental decline” that would make the execution cruel and unusual punishment.

In denial, the judges agreed with the decision of a lower court that declared that cognitive problems did not protect James from their death sentence. James’s lawyers also tried to argue that the heart attack he experienced in prison led to oxygen deprivation that affected his brain, which should have been a reason to stop the execution plans, but the court also denied it.

James’s execution marked the second in the state of Sunshine this year, since James Ford was executed in February for The murders of 1997 of a couple from Charlotte County in front of their little daughter, who survived.
