The former twice heavyweight champion George Foreman died today at age 76. According to the reports, it was at the Foreman Instagram family site and confirmed by the president of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaiman.
The 1968 Olympic Gold Medalist (76-5, 68 kos) enjoyed world titles captured in 1973 and 1994. He retired from sport as a rich man, thanks to being the spokesman for the George Foreman grill. He made a fortune from the grill, which is still present today.
‘Big George’ had an interesting career in two parts. In the first, it was this thin and muscular fighter known for his knockouts by Joe Frazier and Ken Norton.
He was arrested by Muhammad Ali in 1974. He retired after a unanimous decision loss of 12 ronas against Jimmy Young on March 17, 1977, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Foreman was retired for ten years before launching a return in 1987 at age 39.
It is no longer thin, a thick -looking foreman still had its power, but it was slower than it had been in the younger days. He knocked out characters like Gerry Cooney, Dwight Muhammad and Bert Cooper before becoming a heavyweight champion twice when he stopped the FIB champion and AB champion in the tenth round on November 5, 1994. Foreman was 45 years old at the time.
Three years later, Foreman retired after losing a controversial majority decision of 12 rounds against Shannon Briggs on November 22, 1997. Many boxing fans who saw that fight felt that Foreman was stolen and felt that it was something political.
Foreman worked for HBO for 12 years before retiring in 2004. He made interesting transmissions to listen to him, he already Larry Merchant.
