An Israeli air strike in a hospital in Gaza killed a main leader of Hamas and an assistant on Sunday night, said a Hamas official to the BBC.
Ismail Barhoum, head of the group’s financial affairs, was killed in the strike at the Nasser Hospital, the main medical center in Khan Younis.
He was receiving treatment at the hospital after being injured in an air strike four days ago, said the official.
Israel’s army said he had hit a key member of Hamas that operated within the hospital complex after “an extensive intelligence collection process” and said that “precise ammunition” had been used to mitigate the damage.
The Ministry of Health led by Hamas said that “many others”, including medical staff, were injured.
The hospital department’s coup was evacuated after a large part was destroyed, the ministry said.
The images verified by the BBC showed the people trying to extinguish a fire after the strike.
Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of using hospitals as hiding place for weapons and command centers, which the group denies.
Another leader of Hamas, Salah Al-Bardaweel, was killed by an Israeli air strike separated in Khan Younis on Sunday, an official told the BBC.
At least 30 people died in Khan Younis and Rafah until Sunday morning, before the hospital strike at night, the Ministry of Health said.
Israel resumed his military campaign in Gaza on March 18, finishing a high fire that lasted almost two months. Hundreds of people have been killed since then.
Israel blamed Hamas for rejecting a new US proposal to extend the truce. Hamas, in turn, accused Israel of leaving the original agreement agreed in January.
The war was caused by Hamas’ attack against Israel on October 7, 2023, in which some 1,200 people, mainly civil, were killed and another 251 were refused to other hostages.
Israel responded to October 7 with a military offensive in Gaza to destroy Hamas, who has killed more than 50,000 people, said the Ministry of Health led by Hamas.
