The promoter Sampson Lewkowicz says that the OMBR Xander Zayas Ombe could be the next one for the Junior Medium Weight Champion of WBC and WBO Sebastian Fundora unless he takes a fighting of unification against the FIB or AB champion.
Fundora’s goal is to become indisputable in 154. Then, if you can fight one of the other two belt holders, it will take it below and put the mandatory defense against Zayas (21-0, 13 KO). Lewkowicz says that Fundora will not vacate her WBO or WBC titles. It will defend itself against its mandatory challenges because it respects the sport.
Last Saturday night, Fundora (22-1-1, 14 kos) obtained a technical knockout of fourth round of Chordale Booker in a voluntary defense in the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas. It was a fight designed for the founder of ‘The imposing hell’ to take out the oxide ring of twelve months of inactivity from his victory over the 154 -pound WBO champion, Tim Tszyu, on March 30, 2024.
Zayas was trying to begin to prematurely promote the fight by entertaining the ring on Saturday night and asking for a confrontation with Fundora, which was not granted.
“It would not be a problem to fight Zayas. The only thing is that you never know in boxing. So, we’ll see,” said promoter Sampsson Lewkowicz to media About a fight between the WBC and the Junior Medium Weight Champion of the OMB Sebastian Fundora and his OCS OBLATING XANDER ZAYAS.
“We need to negotiate, and we have a month to make a decision. The mandatory is at this time.
The FIB champion, Murtazaliev, published in X last night, congratulating Fundora for his victory and making him know, “I am ready” to start negotiating a unification fight below. If Sebastian and Lewkowicz want to make a unification, this would be their chance.
“At this time, we are waiting for the OMB letter. We will immediately say if we want it or do not want it. We do not expect a month to make a decision, but we have the opportunity to earn much more money in a unification,” Lewkowicz said. “Actually, he (Fundora) will fight for the same money because he wants to reach his four titles.”
The president of the OMB has already said that they want Xander Zayas to fight for the belt after 120 days. Fundora must decide if she wants that party to happen next. It could be a better paid fight for them than to face Murtazaliev.
“I can’t make that decision as a promoter. It depends on Fundora, but definitely, #1 is currently Zayas,” Lewkowicz said. “He is the mandatory. We need to honor the mandatory. The only thing that could happen is unification because it would be more important than money. He wants to be indisputable. Never (he will vacate his OMB title).
“The only thing is that it is the opportunity to fight for the IBF. Then, it makes an exception, and then returns, but will honor the mandatory. Boxing is more than money,” Sampson said about Fundora. “Many boxers will sell their soul for money. Sometimes, you have to think about the good for sport. They are the two champions, AMB and IBF and Zayas,” Lewkowicz said about what the best fights for Fundora.
It is a difficult decision to take on whether to fight Zayas or go for the clash of unification against one of the champions at 154. If you believe in itself, you should go after the fight against Murtazaliev. The AMB champion, Terence Crawford, will be busy for the rest of this year, fighting Canelo Álvarez in September.
