The Niger military ruler has sworn as president of the country for a transition period of five years.
General Abdourahamane Tchiani has led the country since 2023, after he deposed the elected president of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum.
On Wednesday, General Tchiani took the presidential office under a new letter that replaces the constitution of the country of Western Africa.
He was also promoted to the highest military range in the general country of the Army, and signed a decree ordering that all political parties dissolve.
During a ceremony in the capital, Niamey, General Tchiani said about his new military range: “I receive this distinction with great humility … I will strive to live up to the trust put on me.”
The transition to the democratic government is in line with the recommendations made a commission after national discussions.
This five -year period is “flexible” depending on the security status of the country, says the new letter.
Niger has been plagued by jihadist attacks for many years, one of the problems cited in the Board cited when organizing its coup d’etat.
The military acquisition followed a series of others in the region: the meetings also direct neighboring Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso.
The four countries have cut the ties with the former colonial power France and forged new alliances with Russia.
And all except Guinea, have retired from Ecodity, the regional bloc of Western Africa.
Niger’s relations with Ecowas broke when the Board proposed a three -year transition period to the democratic government immediately after the coup d’etat.
Ecowas described this plan as a “provocation” and threatened to intervene with the use of force, before going back later.
The administration of General Tchiani is processing former President Bazoum for accusations of committing high betrayal and undermining national security.
Bazoum is still detained in the presidential palace with his wife, while his son was awarded a provisional release last January.
According to the ANP state news agency, General Tchiani said that Niger’s new letter was in line with traditional constitutions, but also takes “unprecedented measures to protect our natural resources so that Nigeriens really benefit from the exploitation of their wealth.”
