The Sudanese army has told the BBC that it has recovered the airport of the capital, Jardum, from the paramilitary RSF, which marked its last territorial gain in the brutal two -year civil war.
General Mohamed Abdel Rahman Al-Bilawi, commander of the operation in East Jardum, said the troops had assured him and could clear the rest of the RSF fighters at the end of the day.
The army has moved quickly since the presidential palace recovered on Friday and has taken the state institutions taken by the RSF.
The RSF had controlled most of Jartoum since the war began in April 2023. Throughout the country, hundreds of thousands have been killed, and millions have been forced to flee from their homes.
Previously, an army spokesman told the BBC that the troops had seized the Manshiya bridge, the last RSF controlled bridge, along with a military camp in Jebel Awliya, the group strength in the south of Khartum.
He said that the army had recovered all the bridges through the Nile River that connect the three cities that constitute the Great Jartoum.
Residents have reported this week that RSF fighters were retiring south, apparently towards Jebel Awliya, the only place where they could still cross the area.
The videos published on social networks seemed to show some people in the center of Jartum celebrating the army’s progress after what many have described as a brutal occupation of RSF.
Those who are not willing or cannot have consistently informed massive looting for the RSF, whose combatants took care of the civil houses.
Jartoum is one of the areas of the country that the UN said that it approached the famine conditions, due to the looted markets and the restrictions on the aid on both sides.
Rights groups have also documented sexual violence and other abuses.
Both the RSF and the Army have also been accused of disburseing indiscriminate civil areas.
Earl this week, The Air Force bombed a market And the eye witnesses said that dozens of civilians were killed.
The government led by the army was forced to move to Port Sudan in the Red Sea after the RSF took control of the capital at the beginning of the war.
Recovering Jartoum is a huge achievement for the army, which could give him a strategic advantage in the war.
But the war is far from finishing.
The RSF still has almost the entire Darfur region in western Sudan.
Both parties are backed by foreign powers that have poured weapons in the country, and international efforts to negotiate peace have failed.
