Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday that the “old relationship” with the United States “has ended” while promising to participate in a renegotiation on a commercial agreement.
Carney, 60, who won the liberal leadership this month with 86% of the votes after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau retired, spoke in Ottawa after meeting with the provincial ministers of the Nation when he spoke about President Donald TrumpThe new rates.

“The old relationship we had with the United States, based on the deepening of the integration of our economies and strict security and military cooperations, has ended,” he told reporters. “The time for a wide renegotiation of our security and trade relationship will come.”
Carney’s comments did not specify the future of the Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) of the United States (USMCA), which renegotiated during Trump’s first mandate in office.

“What is clear is that we as Canadians have agency. We have power. We are teachers in our own home,” he said. “We control our destiny. We can give ourselves much more than any foreign government, including the United States, can be removed.”
Trump’s tariffs and comments on Make Canada the 51st state have unstable to Canadian leaders and altered many Canadians.
