Six people died after a tourist submarine sank into the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt, said a local governor.

Among another 39 that were rescued, it was said that nine were injured with four in critical condition after the early incident on Thursday near the city of Hurghada.

In total, it was thought that 45 passengers were aboard the submarine, called Sindbad, when it sank near the port.

The governor of the Red Sea area, AMR Hanafy, said that six tourists died and 39 more people were rescued after the submarine sank. There are no lack of people, and it is not known how many of those on board were tourists and how many were crew.

A Russian official in Hurghada, Viktor Voropaev, said two of the dead were children.

That occurred after an earlier statement from the Russian embassy in Egypt, which said that all tourists on board were Russians.

The submarine, Sindbad, had been in operation as a tourist submarine for several years.

According to the company that makes tourist trips, Sindbad submarines, their boats lead passengers on trips to explore coral reefs near the Hurghada coast.

The company says it has two of the only “14 real recreational submarines” in the world, which have 44 seats for passengers and two seats for pilots.

The tours are designed for both adults and children, says the company’s website, and allow passengers to travel 25 meters (82 feet) under water.

The submarine sank on the coast of the city of Hurghada of the Egyptian Red Sea, understands the BBC.

It is believed that the incident took place in the port. The Russian embassy said it happened around 10:00 local time (08:00 GMT), about 0.6 miles (1 km) from the shore.

In recent years, there have been other incidents that involve tourist ships of the Red Sea that operate outside the city.

In November, a tourist ship called Sea Story sank, leaving 11 dead or missing, including a British couple, and 35 survivors. The BBC later heard Accusations of security failures on board.

United Kingdom researchers said last month There were 16 incidents that involved “Liverard” vessels in the area in the last five years, with a number that resulted in deaths.

The authorities in Egypt are investigating the cause of the incident, and the details are currently not clear.
